Against all odds (Torneo de basket en Irlanda)
14 de Junio de 2008 By Henry “Kike” O’Keeffe
Four teams stepped onto the court today in an effort to be crowned champions. The atmosphere inside the gym was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Some 60 students stood cheering frantically for the brave few who would go face to face, shoulder to shoulder and nose to nose, to win, no matter what. There were a couple of notable absences from the finals as two players who train and play daily were missing due to being knocked out in the earlier rounds. In saying that, I feel I have to mention and pay tribute to Lea Roca and Javier Guri who, I believe, deserved a place in these games for the skill and determination they have shown throughout this tournament.
The first semi final was a true classic and featured two teams with real aspirations for a Final place and inevitable victory. The pace and power of some of the players was amazing. Raul Fernandez and Gonzalo Villoria were giants among men in this colossal battle of strength and height, with neither prepared to give in. Alba, Sandra and Santiago combined well to support and attack for GONZALO’S GLADIATORS and ALVARO’s ALSTARS had their own elite squad of players with Sandra, Marta, Alvaro, Maria and Eduardo all prepared to fight for valuable points. In the end it was the GLADIATORS who earned a place in an eagerly anticipated final.
However, before that could happen there was the small matter of a second semi final: the game between ALEJANDRA’S ARMY and PAULA’S PREDATORS, and this was almost too close to call. If the first match was won with strength, height and power, then this game was won because of the determination, team spirit and maybe even a bit of the luck of the Irish. ALEJANDRA’S ARMY which consisted of Alejandra, Manuel, Victor and Alvaro, worked really hard and started out the better of the two. Swift passing and some good shooting saw them take the early advantage. This lead was short-lived as Paula, David, Marta and Jorge worked together in superb style. They battled right until the end, preventing their opponents from having the ball and shot after shot reined in. They claimed a place in the final with a 10-7 victory.
Prior to the final, we had a third fourth place play off which may not have had the appeal of the final, but it did offer some splendid basketball and was keenly contested throughout. Someone had to win and in the end it was Alejandra’s Army who walked away with third place thanks to an 11-8 victory. It took a last minute basket to assure that score line in a dramatic finish.
“We will, we will, rock you!!!!”
Screams from the hysterical supporters with their colorful and beautiful posters and pompoms got the mood going. The teachers did their very best to control the masses as the place was fever-pitch in anticipation. Finally we were underway and PAULA’S PREDATORS had their work cut out for them as they tried to control Gonzalo who was so big and strong he was a beacon and tower for his team and most of their attacks. If a win was to go the way of the GLADIATORS then they would have to deal with Jorge and Paula and in the end that was a task beyond them. Jorge was fast, determined and hard-working. He combined well with David and Marta who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. The score line changed back and forth and although the PREDATOR’S took the early advantage, they quickly found themselves on the back foot and forced to defend deep. There has to be a man of the match, a player of the tournament and I have named Paula Palaez as PLAYER OF THE TOURNAMENT. Today, she fought tooth and nail with every single opponent. She was everywhere, in defense, in attack. Scoring and defending. If you had the ball, she was in your face. If she had the ball, watch out because nothing was going to stop here. It was a low scoring but a highly entertaining final and when the whistle blew it was PAULA’S PREDATORS who were crowned champions with a 7-4 victory.
They may have won AGAINST ALL ODDS, but no one will be betting against them next year. Beware the PREDATORS are here to stay!!!!!!!!
